To reduce the adverse effects of haze around its area of operations, in recent weeks EMP Gelam together with non-government organization (NGO) of Sukses Bersama joined to distribute free masks to school children and local people on Friday, August 28, 2015 in the village of Kebon IX of Sungai Gelam Subdistrict in Muaro Jambi.
The masks were distributed at the early-education institution (PAUD) of “Kuntum Melati” of Kebon IX and Primary School (SD) 95 of Talang Kerinci. The mask distribution was in coincidence with the socialization of handling the garbage in the location. On the occasion, the Team of Commrel of EMP Gelam and KSM of Sukses Bersama also briefed the pupils and primary student about the way of using the masks for children.
Principal of SD 95 of Talang Kerinci Rosmita appreciated such an initiative by the management of EMP Gelam. She said the aid of masks from EMP Gelam could greatly help the students in doing their daily activities. “So far there have been a lot of students who are suffering from acute infection of respiration (ISPA) due to poor condition of air in the surrounding areas,” said the Principal.
Also, a number of parents of the students at the school thanked the company for the aid. At least the aid of masks can help prevent and reduce the adverse effects of haze to the health of their children.
“We are very grateful for the company’s concern about the children here,” said one of the parents during the event.
Haze in Jambi Province has already been in a stage of disrupting the activities of local people. To the worst, the people have already felt the difficulty of breathing due to existing haze.
Approximately 9,150 hectares of peat land have been on fire with 320 hotspots that are scattered in a number of areas in Jambi Province. Muaro Jambi is the place with the second largest number of hot spots totaling 123 after East Tanjung Jabung (Tanjabtim) with a total number of hot spots of 124. (*)
